IPFW triumphs and transitions
Karen Griggs, English and linguistics, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Bureau of Water and Resource Regulation Advisory Council by former Gov. Joe Kernan.

In the omnibus budget bill passed by Congress in November, IPFW became the recipient of a $150,000 grant for improvements to its dental education programs. U.S. Rep. Mark Souder shepherded the appropriation through the legislative process. The money will be used to upgrade two dental laboratories with advanced digital equipment. Elaine Foley, director of dental hygiene, noted the grant will allow IPFW to continue to graduate very well trained people into the workforce. “The dental hygiene and dental assisting programs are rated the best in Indiana, and this will keep us the best,” Foley said.

The Institute for Human Rights hosted its inaugural annual conference Dec. 10-11 at the Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce, with the theme “Guantanamo Bay and the Judicial Treatment of Aliens.” The conference featured opening remarks from the director of the institute, Clark Butler, philosophy. The keynote address, “Breaking the Tradition: The Case for the 640 Detainees in Guantanamo,” was presented by David Rudenstine, dean of the Benjamin N. Cardozo Law School, Yeshiva University, New York City.
