IU president a ‘Sagamore’

Herbert

IU President Adam W. Herbert is one of the newest Sagamores of the Wabash.

The designation, considered to be the highest honor an Indiana governor bestows, was made on Jan. 9, the date of former Indiana Gov. Joe Kernan’s last full day in office.

Kernan said the award was intended to express “the appreciation of all Hoosiers” for Herbert’s commitment to IU and to the state.

“You have distinguished yourself by your humanity in living, your loyalty in friendship, your wisdom in council and your inspiration in leadership,” Kernan said.

For more than a half century, Indiana governors have used the Sagamore of the Wabash award to recognize distinguished service and accomplishments by Hoosiers. The term “sagamore” was used by the American Indian Tribes of the northeastern United States to describe a lesser chief or a great man among the tribe to whom the true chief would look for wisdom and advice.
