Meet IU Bloomington’s Staff Merit Award winners

In December, six outstanding IU Bloomington staff employees were recipients of the 2004 Staff Merit Awards. A $1,000 prize for each was awarded at a reception hosted by Chancellor Ken Gros Louis.

Service staff category

“Esmeralda sets the standard for our housekeeping team…In the years I have worked with her, there have not been any unhappy customers in her section of rooms,” wrote a supervisor. “In fact, several guests request her rooms when they return.”

Esmeralda Burton
Guest room attendant, Indiana Memorial Union

Service staff category

Nila Mosier
Custodian, Building Services

“She genuinely cares about her job and the people around her. Her personality is only outranked by her demeanor.”

Support staff category

“Janet’s performance vividly demonstrates her special efforts toward improving IU for the benefit of students, faculty and staff, especially during the past five years…It has been mostly because of Janet…that CELT has gracefully weathered global, national and local storms in recent years.”

Janet Long
Admissions facilitator, Center for English Language Training

Support staff category

Mary King
Accounting associate, Office of Research and Development, School of Education

“She can almost always find a solution that’s appropriate and within guidelines but not immediately apparent. She does this with cheerfulness and grace.”

Professional staff category

Lillian Maria Casillas
Director of La Casa, the Latino Cultural Center

“Lillian’s strength,” wrote one of her supervisors, “is her ability to bring people together, to make them understand that working together, they can accomplish more than could be accomplished working apart.”

Professional staff category

Michael Valliant
Manager of information technology, School of Journalism

He manages this stressful, demanding job with extraordinary maturity. He has a talent for (dealing with) interruption, a gift for helping people help themselves rather than simply fixing problems, and a calmness in dealing with angry, frustrated people,” wrote one nominator.
