Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The IU campuses observed Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 20,
and events to commemorate Black History Month may be accessed at
online campus events calendars throughout February.
James Mumford directed the African
American Choral Ensemble in contemporary and traditional African
American choral music as part of the celebration at the Buskirk
Chumley Theatre in Bloomington.
A winter wonderland

The woods were lovely, dark and deep, last week near the arboretum
in Bloomington, a winter scene mirrored on IU campuses throughout
the state and reminiscent of Robert Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on
a Snowy Evening,” first published in 1923. Frost served as a poet-in-residence
at IU Bloomington in April 1943 and inscribed a farewell in the
Bryan House guest book using the final stanza of the poem, with
the heading: Turning Homeward. Frost had promises to keep, and later
that year, he received his fourth Pulitzer Prize.
