UNESCO bioethicist to lecture Wednesday

Ryuichi Ida, a professor at the Graduate School of Law at Kyoto (Japan) University, will discuss “Ethical and Legal Issues in International Genomics: A UNESCO Perspective” at a presentation Wednesday (Feb. 7) at the Medical Sciences Building, Room B26, at IUPUI. Lunch will be available at the hour-long presentation.

Ida, who is collaborating with Eric Meslin, director of IU’s new Center for Bioethics, is the chair of the International Bioethics Committee of UNESCO. The IBC is one of the more influential transnational bioethics organizations in the world and has focused heavily on genetics issues during the past six years. IBC spent many years developing the UNESCO Declaration on the Human Genome and Human Rights, which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1998.
