| Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability in the United States, but survivors aren’t the only ones who suffer. Family caregivers of stroke survivors, especially of those with aphasia or cognitive impairment, are at risk for depression, psychosocial impairments and mortality resulting from constant demands of providing care, according to Tami Bakas, a professor at the IU School of Nursing on the Indianapolis campus.
She will be principal investigator in a longitudinal study of 66 family caregivers of stroke survivors with aphasia and/or cognitive impairment to determine their quality of life one month after a loved one’s stroke and again four months later. The study is being conducted through IU’s Center for Enhancing Quality of Life in Chronic Illness. | |
