| Reflected in the new logo “Linking the Campus and the Community,” IU’s Bloomington Division of Continuing Studies has increased outreach efforts to provide lifelong learning opportunities for residents of south central Indiana, both on campus and at new locations in Bloomington, Bedford and Nashville.
Working adults who want to pursue a degree in the evening, for example, can now earn the associate of arts in general studies degree and choose from more than 200 courses offered after 5:30 p.m. Most courses are offered on the IU Bloomington campus, but some are taught at Bloomington High School South and at the Landmark Plaza on West Third Street. Partnerships have also been developed with the Brown County School Corporation and the Lawrence County Learning Center to offer non-credit courses.
The division also has expanded non-credit offerings to include certificate programs to help individuals advance in or change their careers. Oracle database administration, Web development and computer graphics are taught in the division’s new Landmark Plaza computer training facility in Bloomington, in partnership with the local WorkOne office. New certificate programs in not-for-profit management and project management will be offered at the Showers Center and Teletron, respectively. Other courses include conflict resolution in the workplace, Spanish in the workplace, and half-day seminars on computer security and the “Fish!” philosophy, co-sponsored with the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce.
The division’s new management and technology office has developed relationships with local employers to provide training programs to address workforce development needs, as well as to make those displaced by recent plant closings aware of the many programs offered by the university to help them develop marketable career skills. Summer technology workshops have been developed in partnership with the Department of Telecommunications and the School of Education to help educators and training professionals master new media software applications.
