IU East Center for Economic Education awarded highest recognition

In August, after an accreditation review by the National Council on Economic Education, the IU East Center for Economic Education was awarded a full five-year affiliation status, the highest level of recognition for a center.

“I am extremely happy with this outcome. Community and university support is vital to facilitate teacher participation in workshops. Economic literacy pays dividends by ensuring the progress and stability of our nation,” said Ashton Veramallay, the center’s director.

The national council verifies the quality of economic education programs throughout the national network with the reviews. The Economics America Program at IU East is one of the quality programs raising public awareness of the need for economic education. This awareness is a large component of the national council’s nationwide Campaign for Economic Literacy.

The IU East Center operates in conjunction with the Indiana Council on Economic Education and the National Council on Economic Education to improve economic literacy.

• Setting standards on what every student should know about economics;

• providing in-service training programs for primary and secondary teachers;

• preparing, distributing and evaluating course materials, teaching units and curriculum guides;

• evaluating results and instruments for assessing student performance;

• providing economic workshops, seminars and topic series involving employers, employees and ministers.

Since the center opened in 1978, it has provided economic education training to over a 1,000 teachers, impacting over 100,000 students in east central Indiana.
