Riley Hospital International Adoption Clinic meets a growing need

More Americans are adopting children from overseas, and the first stop many families make upon their return to the United States. is a health-care facility that specializes in treating such kids. According to Dr. James Conway, director of Riley Hospital’s International Adoption Clinic on the IUPUI campus and professor in the IU School of Medicine, diverse geographic origins of adopted children often present unique and difficult medical and psychosocial issues best addressed by specialists skilled in geographic medicine and complex pediatric assessment. Riley’s clinic, operated through its Pediatric Infectious Disease Section, has responded to the growing challenge. It has become a comprehensive medical resource for Hoosier families adopting children overseas—and a consultative service to the primary care physicians who treat them. The clinic is designed to offer information, comfort and support for newly formed Indiana families, as well as those considering international adoption.
