FACET and its programs

By Susan Williams
The Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching (FACET), an IU presidential initiative, was designed to recognize and enhance outstanding teaching throughout the IU system and for promoting continued development of teaching excellence among colleagues at IU and beyond. Since its inception in 1989, FACET has recognized 313 faculty, 22 or 23 each year, who represent a wide variety of disciplines. Winners, chosen from nominees, have demonstrated exceptional commitment to teaching, the ability to be catalysts for students and colleagues, the capacity for self-evaluation, creativity in course preparation and presentation, skill in integrating instruction, research and scholarship, and influence and impact on student learning.

But FACET is not limited to its best known activity. Among others sponsored by the group are an annual Indiana Faculty Leadership Institute for post-tenure faculty, the Associate Faculty Conference and the Future Faculty Teaching Fellows Program, co-sponsored by Research and the University Graduate School, of which D. Christopher Brooks was a part (see story at right).

For more information on FACET and its faculty learning opportunities, contact Eileen Bender, director. FACET is headquartered at Wiekamp Hall DW3181, IU South Bend. E-mail Bender at: facet@iusb.edu or visit the Web site:
