At the Sample Gates in Bloomington, where Kirkwood
Avenue meets Indiana Avenue, one of the 45 IUB Physical Plant-Campus
Division’s employees snow plows the intricate brick pathways. Campus
Division relies on its weather satellite more than The Old Farmers'
Almanac to keep track of conditions that might require employees
to be on call for snow removal details around the clock, said Dave
Hurst, manager of Campus Division. The front snow plow will be replaced
with mowing mechanisms in the spring, and the machines, called Groundskeepers,
will convert to riding lawnmowers, Hurst said. Also ahead in April:
some 35,000 tulips that were planted in autumn will make their entrance.

David Baker, Distinguished Professor of music at
the IU School of Music in Bloomington, discussed the history of
jazz at a local bookstore recently. If you missed the PBS JAZZ
series by Ken Burns, which aired in January on affiliate WTIU, take
a look at the IUB Department of Jazz Studies Web site which has
links to the Burns' historical work. IU has jazz roots of its own,
having established one of the first accredited university jazz programs
in the country. An IU historical jazz footnote: Fantasy Records
released an album of music by IU student saxophonist Jerry Coker
in 1955. The album was called Modern Music from Indiana University
and included other IU student musicians Bob Cowart (tenor sax),
Fred Fox and Roger Pemberton (baritone sax), Al Kiger (trumpet)
and Jim Hewitt (trombone).

IUB freshmen who were led to believe that little snow came to regions south of Indianapolis in the Hoosier state have been in for a surprise this season. Here a few bemittened students wait at the bus stop.
