IU Webmail makes its E-mail debut at IUB, IUPUI

By Christine Fitzpatrick
In the interest of continuously improving the rich technological environment at IU, University Information Technology Services (UITS) has developed a Web-based E-mail system, IU Webmail, available for users at IUB and IUPUI. During the summer and fall 2000, IU Webmail was deployed in a pilot phase on the two campuses with a limited number of test users; in 2001, the application becomes a full production service.

IU Webmail provides basic E-mail functionality through an easy-to-use Web interface, similar in style to MSN Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail. Among its features is a system for sending and opening attachments that is simpler than what has been available via the text-based program, Pine, which has been the program most widely used at IUB and IUPUI for many years. Users should keep in mind that Pine will still be available on both campuses—IU Webmail is just another means by which they may access their Shakespeare or Jewel E-mail account. However, IU Webmail is not a substitute for Microsoft Outlook—it does not access a user’s Exchange E-mail account.

Terry Usrey, director of UITS data telecommunications, commented on the advantageous features of the new system: “In designing IU Webmail, UITS was very concerned with addressing many of the usability issues of Pine. Not only does IU Webmail work well over a modem on any computer with a Web browser, but it allows for familiar desktop editing, supports active Web links and handles attachments with ease.”

Brian Voss, associate vice president of UITS telecommunications, added that students, faculty and staff at IUB and IUPUI have voiced a strong desire through UITS surveys for an easy-to-use, Web-based E-mail client. “Consequently, UITS has been working hard for the past year and a half to build such a system, which includes a new IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) infrastructure for each campus,” Voss said.

To use IU Webmail, students, staff and faculty at IUB and IUPUI should go to the appropriate campus Web sites below. Access via these sites is also available to users on IU regional campuses who have a Shakespeare account through IUB or a Jewel account through IUPUI.
