The life sciences field in Indiana is growing, causing a higher demand for more people with expertise and trained professionals. In order to help meet those demands, IU East has approved a program in which students may earn a laboratory science certificate.
A laboratory science certificate may help graduating students earn a position as a lab technician, research assistant or a position in a related life sciences field. Obtaining a certificate may also help enhance a current career through education, wages and position.
The certification requires completion of 20 credit hours at IU East. The certificate includes courses in biology and chemistry and is coupled with an internship at a local laboratory or independent study course. The courses are dependent on background and previous college experience.
Peggy Branstrator, a lecturer in the Division of Natural Science and Mathematics, said the certificate enables students and potential students the ability to complete higher education without seeking a bachelor’s degree, combine the certificate with an undergraduate degree they are already pursuing or participate in the program to obtain skills.
“One of the key components to the lab science certificate is the hands-on experience,” Branstrator said.
For information on obtaining a lab science certificate, contact the IU East Division of Natural Science and Mathematics at 765-973-8285 or 800-959-EAST, ext. 285.
