Norwegian scholar to discuss African ‘language of instruction’ issues

Brock-Utne

Birgit Brock-Utne, a professor of education and development at the University of Oslo, will be presenting a talk as part of the Drs. Beatrice S. and David I. Miller Education Seminar Series on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 4 p.m. in the auditorium of the School of Education in Bloomington.

Brock-Utne will discuss the findings of her research and field work examining why African children are being taught in languages of the former colonial powers as opposed to their native languages. The debate on the issue of shifting the language of instruction in Tanzanian secondary and higher education from English to Kiswahili will be looked at in some detail.

A follow-up discussion will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 18, in Room 2277. For more information, go to this Web site of the School of Education Policy Council:
