‘Master Harold’ examines apartheid
Athol Fugard’s masterpiece MASTER HAROLD…and the boys is set in 1950, two years after the formal introduction of apartheid in South Africa. The play confronts not only the racism of those who initiated this system of legally-mandated discrimination, but those liberals who opposed it, yet were unwilling to examine their own racist tendencies.

Fusing rich comedy, deeply drawn characters, trenchant commentary and Fugard’s most intensely personal story, the play is on stage at the Ruth N. Halls Theatre in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center on the Bloomington campus. A curtain talk will follow the Tuesday, March 1, performance.

When: 8 p.m. – Feb. 25-26, 28 and March 1-5.
Where: Ruth N. Halls Theatre in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center
Tickets: $15/adults; $13/students

South African playwright Athol Fugard visited the IU Bloomington campus in September 2000 serving as the IU Class of 1963 Wells Scholar Professor. While on campus, he spoke with Bruce Burgun, IUB theater professor, and they enjoyed a conversation at the production studio of Instructional Support Services.
