McNish receives Martin Luther King Multicultural and Diversity Enhancement Award at IU East

McNish

Cliff McNish has won the campus’ 2005 Martin Luther King Jr. Multicultural and Diversity Enhancement Award. As director of the Twenty-First Century Scholars program, he has worked hard to integrate diversity into every aspect of the program. He was presented with a plaque in January and his name will be inscribed on the campus MLK plaque displayed in Whitewater Hall. His program’s summer session at Earlham College has fostered greater diversity at the college level by including a diverse population of students. He led the effort for that diversity by speaking personally with students and leading presentations at the Townsend Community Center and Boys and Girls Club of Wayne County. He also recruited diverse faculty and resident assistant staff, has served as a mentor to pre-college and college students, established a scholarship for college-bound high school students and drafted the campus’ diversity plan. Additionally, he assisted in acquiring a Lumina Foundation grant aimed at devoting a first-year seminar to Twenty-First Century Scholars enrolled at IU East. Initiatives falling under this category include a study of sophomore and junior drop-out rates, a study of the effectiveness of the first-year seminar and the impact of the scholars program on retention.
