| A jazz concert, Lilly Library exhibit and a keynote address by Indiana University President Adam W. Herbert will highlight a two-day inaugural celebration April 14-15. The special events mark the official installation of Herbert as IU’s 17th president.
According to Robin Roy Gress, secretary of the IU Board of Trustees and inauguration coordinator, the event has tremendous historic significance for the university. “This is only the 17th president in 184 years. It offers a great opportunity for the university community to come together,” she said.
The formal inauguration ceremony starts at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 15, at the IU Auditorium in Bloomington. The ceremony will begin with a robed academic procession that includes 300-400 participants from peer institutions, learned societies, delegates and faculty from IU’s eight campuses. Gress said the procession is a time-honored tradition and will be comprised of delegates from at least 75 colleges and universities, including representatives from in-state sister institutions.
Following the procession, constituents representing faculty, staff and students will offer remarks. The program also includes a special family connection for Herbert: His niece, the Rev. Deborah Martin, will give the invocation.
Inauguration music will include organ arrangements and performances. The IU School of Music’s famed baritone, Tim Noble, will lead the national anthem, and a selection from the IU Philharmonic Orchestra and the African American Choral Ensemble are planned. James Mumford, director of the African American Choral Ensemble, will lead the singing of the Alma Mater at the end of the ceremony.
A central component of the ceremony will be the keynote address by Herbert. He is expected to outline his vision for the university. Following the ceremony, attendees will have the opportunity to greet the new president during an open reception in the auditorium’s lobby.
