| Super Sleuth: Perhaps best known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in a string of movies filmed during the ’30s and ’40s, Basil Rathbone (right) was also an ardent advocate for high-quality entertainment. During an Oct. 14, 1951, lecture at the IU Auditorium in Bloomington, he urged audience members to reject mediocre movies, radio and television. After his lecture, Rathbone performed readings: the murder scene soliloquy from Macbeth and the “To be or not to be” soliloquy from Hamlet. The following Monday, Rathbone visited WFIU studios for an interview with radio announcer and professor George Willeford (at left). According to the Indiana Daily Student, the interview was broadcast over WFBM on Oct. 21. 1951.
