Gloria Steinem, feminist author and founder of Ms. magazine, will speak at the IU East Women’s Commission Conference on Friday, March 28.

She will discuss “The Empowerment of Women.”

“This is a Women’s Commission outreach project for the women of the campus and community,” said Diana Fahl, co-chair of the IU East Commission on the Status of Women. “I hope everyone, male and female, will leave the conference with a renewed excitement and focus toward the future of what can and should be done. I also hope that there will be bonding and support developed among women of this area.”

Sandra Leek, executive director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, will make the presentation, “Are We Equal Yet?”

Break-out sessions will include the titles “To Be or Not to Be (A Mom): Your Career, Procreation and the Law”; “Self-Esteem: Removing Approval Addiction,” moderated by IU East nursing professor Deborah May; and “B.A.R.B.I.E: Banish All Ridiculous Body Image Expectations,” moderated by Amy Stadick, director of the IU East Center for Health Promotion.

Vivian Auditorium of Whitewater Hall will be the location of presentations beginning at 8 a.m. Registration fee is $99 per person.
