Underwater science

IUB graduate student Chris Parks (right) instructs Kara Alexander,
a lab supervisor at the IU School of Journalism, during an instructional
session on high-tech diving gear hosted by the IU School of Health,
Physical Education and Recreation earlier this month on the Bloomington
campus. For a land-locked Midwestern state, Indiana has a high profile
in underwater science, thanks to academic programs and research emanating
from HPER. The school established the first underwater resource management
certificate program in the nation in 2001, and recent outreach work
includes exploration of California’s Emerald Bay on Lake Tahoe for
century-old fishing vessels; a project in the Florida Keys to create
the world’s largest artificial reef; and another project in the Dominican
Republic to establish the world’s first underwater shipwreck museum.
Such undertakings often facilitate partnerships with other university
entities, such as the School of Public and Environmental Affairs,
the Office of International Programs and the Mathers Museum of World
Cultures.
