The dolphins that took an untoward leave of absence from the deity Venus last semester at Showalter Fountain are back. The Bloomington campus landmark is the creation of Robert Laurent, who taught at IU from 1942 to 1961 and designed the fountain to resemble Botticelli’s painting, The Birth of Venus. The fountain was unveiled at Laurent’s retirement 40 years ago. Thanks to the campus sheet metal and plumbing shops, Venus’ errant mammals will begin spritzing as soon as the pool crew adjusts the water pipes.

Match day 2001--Jeremy Roscoe celebrates after learning he will do a pediatrics residency at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He was among 260 students matched at the March 22 event. Roscoe, whose envelope was selected last, also took home a bonus of $259, thanks to his fellow students. It has become the practice for each student to leave a dollar bill in a bed pan after receiving his or her residency assignment.

The Bloomington Fire Department took the opportunity
during IU's spring break week to run practice drills with its 100-foot
aerial at residence halls on the Bloomington campus. The campus'
Office of Risk Management set up the session for local firefighters.
Engineer Jason Hines and aerial technician Dennis Purtlebaugh operated
the "cherry picker." Firefighters Chris Welch, Ron Bateman
and John Hayes were in the bucket.
