On this very day in 1955, the 27th Academy Award for best picture went to On the Waterfront, and Marlon Brando and Grace Kelly took home the acting Oscars; in 1981, IU won against North Carolina 63-50, winning the 43rd NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship; in 1987, one of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings of sunflowers sold for a record $39.7 million (Van Gogh was a birthday boy, too, March 30, 1853); in 1867, U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward signed a treaty with Russia for the purchase of Alaska for $7 million (or roughly 2 cents an acre); and in 1967, the cover picture of The Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper album was photographed.
