Thirty-nine individuals, foundations or corporations were honored recently for their contributions to IUPUI during the 16th annual Spirit of Philanthropy Celebration. The event, hosted by the IUPUI campus, the IU Foundation and the Center on Philanthropy at the IU School of Liberal Arts, recognizes recipients for their financial support and volunteer services. Each academic or service program at IUPUI may nominate one or two honorees from the external community.
This year’s nominators and recipients are:
Center on Philanthropy:
• Robert F. Hartsook: author, speaker, and president and CEO of Hartsook Companies, Inc., a fund-raising consulting firm, has counseled not-for-profit and development professionals. Hartsook Companies has been a strong contributor to the Center on Philanthropy and has endowed the Arthur C. Frantzreb Lecture.
• Richard Behrenhausen: president and chief executive officer of the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation, has established his commitment to philanthropy through his generous support and insight in cultivating the Center on Philanthropy. Currently, he serves as a member of the center’s board of governors.
Center for Service and Learning:
• Hawthorne Community Center: Through partnerships with the Center for Service and Learning and the IUPUI campus, Hawthorne Community Center provides tutoring, after-school programming, senior programming and social services to near west side residents. The center also provides a valuable resource for service learning opportunities to IUPUI students.
Community Learning Network:
• Weyerhaeuser Company has supported adult learners by providing scholarship funding to the IUPUI General Studies Program.
IU School of Dentistry:
• Dr. R. Dale Lentz and Phyllis S. Lentz: Dr. Lentz, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, has co-chaired the School of Dentistry’s committee for the IUPUI Comprehensive Campaign. Through his time and support, a chair in the Department of Oral Surgery has been established. Both he and his wife, Phyllis, have volunteered on mission trips to Haiti and Ukraine.
Division of Labor Studies:
• Joseph Lohman is an international representative for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Sixth District, has supported the Division of Labor Studies by serving on the statewide advisory committee and cultivating the Organize Indiana Program. Through his leadership, Lohman has been a voice in improving the lives of many Hoosier workers.
• Robert Voorhies has served as president of the Central Indiana Labor Council since 1981 and has helped bring more distinction to the Division of Labor Studies through his guidance and promotional support.
IU School of Education:
• Mary G. Thomas, who taught biology at Emmerich Manual High School for 20 years, has been a continuous supporter of IUPUI through her philanthropic contributions. She earned her graduate degree in secondary education from the IU School of Education at IUPUI in 1977.
Health and Rehabilitation Sciences:
• Frances Ekstam, the founder of the physical therapy degree program, has educated students for several years. Through her generosity, the program will offer the Patricia Rae Evans Fellowship, which will be offered to qualified first-year doctor of physical therapy degree students.
• Sheila Daneen Ward, who earned a doctor of medical science
degree from the IU School of Medicine, directed the nutrition
component of the National Institutes of Health Clinical Research
Center and led the dietetic internship. A fellowship in her
name will be awarded to a dietetic internship graduate to
pursue a master’s degree in clinical nutrition. She has also
endowed a professorship in oncology at the medical school.
Herron School of Art:
• Drs. August and Margaret Watanabe: The Watanabes have been long-standing contributors to the Herron School of Art and played a major role in making the school’s future home a reality. They have been involved in several committees, including the capital campaign committee and the Fraser Travel Fund.
• The Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation: For many years, the Clowes family has been a great supporter of the Herron School of Art. Most recently, the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation contributed a significant gift to support the building of Eskenazi Hall, the art school’s future home.
Intercollegiate Athletics:
• Scott T. Taylor; Taylor, executive director of the Police Athletic League of Indianapolis and vice president of the Jaguars Athletic Board, directs the board’s annual giving campaign. Taylor is a former catcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
IU School of Informatics:
• Albert Chen; Chen, founder, chairman and chief executive officer of the network solutions company Telamon Corporation, is a founding member of the IU School of Informatics Dean’s Advisory Council. He established the school’s first scholarship which is offered to undergraduates.
IUPU Columbus:
• Harold Force, president of Force Construction Co., Inc., has helped develop the IU-PU Columbus campus through his contributions, leadership and advocacy. While serving on the campus’ board of advisers, he has helped recruit new members and has supported development efforts.
• The Arvin Gift Committee has contributed the largest gift to the IU-PU Columbus campus. The gift will support the IU Bachelor of Science in Business and IU Master in Business Administration degree programs, which will be offered on the campus.
IU School of Journalism:
• Patrick J. McKeand, former publisher of IUPUI’s student
newspaper, The Sagamore, and adjunct faculty member
of the IU School of Journalism, served as a teacher and mentor
to students for 11 years on the IUPUI campus. Through his
devotion, an endowed scholarship for future editors of The
Sagamore was established by alumni.
IU Kelley School of Business:
• Katz, Sapper & Miller, LLP, a locally-based CPA and consulting firm, has been a major contributor of undergraduate student scholarships with the IU Kelley School of Business. The company has also supported the Kelley Indianapolis Career Placement Office.
IU School of Law-Indianapolis
• Hon. Brent E. Dickson, an Indiana Supreme Court justice, has directed a state task force to study issues of public access and privacy of information. He recently served on the Purdue School of Liberal Arts Dean’s Advisory Council.
IU School of Liberal Arts
• Miriam Z. Langsam and Jean A. Oswalt: Langsam, former associate dean of the IUPUI School of Liberal Arts and professor of history, served IUPUI as a teacher, administrator and mentor for 40 years. She helped establish the Young Scholars Program, the Women’s Studies Program, American Sign Language/English Interpreting Program and services for students with disabilities. Langsam’s partner, Oswalt, worked in the Office of Adaptive Education Services at IUPUI and retired as staff council for Indiana’s Family and Social Services Agency. Together, they developed the Langsam/Oswalt Summer Fellowship of Lecturers, which makes it possible for non-tenure track faculty to take a sabbatical for professional development opportunities.
IU School of Medicine:
• The Catherine Peachey Fund Inc. has contributed more than $1.4 million to the IU Cancer Center to support life-saving research for women with breast cancer. The fund is named in memory of Catherine Peachey, who died from breast cancer in 1994.
• Norman and Maxine Cohen sought medical care from the IU School of Medicine, and established the Norman I. and Maxine Cohen Medical Research Fund to support research in cardiology, hematology/oncology and ophthalmology.
IU School of Music:
• Craig Gigax, president and owner of Meridian Music, has been a strong supporter of IUPUI and the arts community in Indianapolis since returning to his hometown. Through his commitment and support, a research and development project has been cultivated through the partnership of Meridian Music and the Yamaha Corporation.
IU School of Nursing:
• Dr. Glenn Irwin, former IUPUI Chancellor and dean of the IU School of Medicine, has been instrumental in building learning opportunities in nursing education. Through his contributions and leadership, he helped establish the IU School of Nursing’s first endowed professorship.
• Marjorie Tarplee, a former newspaper executive, has served as chair of the school’s Board of Advisors and co-chair of the school’s Comprehensive Campaign for the campus. Through her time and commitment, she helped raise $14 million, $4 million more than their campaign goal.
University Information Technology Services (UITS)/Office of the Vice President for Information Technology (OVPIT):
• Dell, Inc.: Through a strong partnership with Dell, technology initiatives on all eight campuses of Indiana University have benefited.
• The SBC Foundation enabled the community to increase access to information technologies for the purposes of training and professional skills development.
IU School of Optometry:
• Dr. Polly Hendricks, an optometrist and former part-time faculty member, has planned to establish a community service scholarship to students in honor of colleague Dr. Linda Casser Locke. She has mentored and hired several IU alumni and has inspired them to participate in community outreach.
• Marchon Eyewear, one of the world’s largest producers of eyewear and sunwear, has partnered with the school to develop several ophthalmic eyewear centers and seminars for students and has contributed generously to programs.
Purdue School of Science:
• The Efroymson Fund is a donor-advised fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation and has supported wetland restoration efforts conducted by the IUPUI Center for Earth and Environmental Science (CEES). CEES scientists, students and volunteers will restore a wetland at the Scott Starling Nature Sanctuary in Eagle Creek Park with support from the fund.
• The Rotary Club has been a great supporter of the CEES by working jointly to restore sections of the White River in downtown Indianapolis.
IU School of Physical Education:
• Jackie and Wayne Leonard have been loyal supporters of the IU School of Physical Education and Tourism Management’s academic and scholarship programs. Jackie, a graduate of the IU School of Physical Education and Tourism Management, taught physical education at the Indiana School for the Blind for several years.
IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs:
• Gayla, Laura and Andrew Pitts: After the death of former
associate faculty member C. Michael Pitts, his family established
an IUPUI fellowship with the IU School of Public and Environmental
Affairs in his honor. Gayla, Laura and Andrew are each graduates
and supporters of IU. IU School of Social Work:
• Jane Schlegel, who earned her master’s degree from the IU School of Social Work, has helped lead IUPUI’s Comprehensive Campaign. She and her husband, Fred also contributed a planned gift to establish a fellowship for master’s level students who are interested in a career in development.
University College:
• After the tragic loss of their son, Yale Pratt, a master’s degree student in the Department of Sociology in the IU School of Liberal Arts, James and Susan Pratt established the Yale Pratt Mentoring Fund to provide scholarships for freshman aged 25 to 35 enrolled in University College.
University Library:
• In memory of his wife, Jeannette, Neil Matthew created the Jeannette Morrow Matthew Fund for Archival Photography at the IUPUI University Library. The fund will help archivists digitize the current and future collections of photographs and materials. Jeannette Matthew was the campus’ first archivist and Neil is a former associate professor for the Herron School of Art.
