| Dr. Robert Schrier, the nation’s longest serving chairman of a medical school’s department of medicine, received the Distinguished Medical Alumni Award, and Dr. Robert Holden received the Glenn W. Irwin Jr. Distinguished Faculty Award last Saturday (May 18). Both are IU School of Medicine alums and former deans.
James Bond fans awaiting the release next fall of Die Another Day, the 20th installment of the most successful film franchise in cinema history, may be interested to know that IU’s Lilly Library houses an Ian Fleming collection of note. J.K. Lilly Jr. was a major collector of important books in the history of science and medicine, and it is to his efforts that IU’s Lilly Library houses many treasures in both fields.
But the largest single addition to the books Lilly accumulated came in the collection of Ian Fleming, the creator of Agent 007 who was portrayed in 14 spy novels that have sold 60 million copies to date and have recently been re-released by Penguin. Whereas Lilly’s interests were mainly in pure science, the 600-odd books from Fleming’s collection include many on applied science and technology.
