What a celebration it was!

IU Bloomington Chancellor Ken Gros Louis (at podium)
was an honorary degree recipient and delivered the commencement
address as well at Bloomington’s commencement exercises May 5. At
far left is Paul Eisenberg, university grand marshal, with other
members of the platform committee, which included (left to right)
honorary degree recipient Jack Gill; Kumble Subbaswamy, dean of
the IU College of Arts and Sciences; IU trustees Steve Ferguson,
Cora Breckenridge, Steven Backer and Fred Eichhorn; Chancellor Gros
Louis and President Myles Brand.

What looks like a giant origami bird at the IU Bloomington commencement was really one graduate throwing academic decorum to the winds at Memorial Stadium May 5. The 172nd commencement ceremony was a sunny blue spring day, and 6,064 new IU degree holders were officially acknowledged.

Leave it to the digital generation. A phone call
to the home crowd sitting in the stands at Memorial Stadium for
IUB's 172nd commencement was a sure-fire way to be identified among
graduates.

Henry Glassie, College Professor of folklore at IUB, shares a moment of celebration.
