IU East will be 30 years old on July 1

'It's a New Generation'

Plans are underway for a year-long celebration of Indiana University East's 30th year. "Its a New Generation” will kick off on Sunday, July 1, with the Jeff Hamilton Trio performing two concerts at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. A reception is scheduled from 3-5:45 p.m

In 1971, the IU trustees created the Richmond campus as the seventh regional location of the university. In 1975, IU East moved from the basement of Carpenter Hall at Earlham College and what was known as the Eastern Indiana Center of Earlham College, to the current campus on Chester Boulevard.

“Thirty years marks a significant point in the growth of the campus,” said IU East Chancellor David Fulton. "IU East has come of age. This is a time to reflect on the rich experiences of the first generation of our faculty, staff and students, but it is also a time to look ahead to the opportunities that only the future can provide."

A special anniversary publication, entitled Generation East, will be released on July 1. The publication will focus on alumni, including articles on the generations of families who have attended IU East, community leaders, and the past and future of the campus.

In recognition of the anniversary, campus organizations have adopted various projects. The IU East Staff Council has just completed the refurbishing of the Joseph and Lucile Garr Hill fountain, located in Whitewater Hall. The IU East Alumni Association has set a $30,000 scholarship endowment goal.

“The hope is that the entire campus and community will join in marking this very special occasion in the life of IU East,” said Joanne Matika, vice chancellor for external relations and development. “We are absolutely delighted to have one of Richmond’s own kick off what promises to be an exciting year.”

A native of Richmond, Hamilton grew up listening to his parents’ big band records and at the age of eight, began playing drums along with Oscar Peterson records. He has been on nearly 200 recordings with artists such as Natalie Cole, Diana Krall, Milt Jackson, Rosemary Clooney, Barbra Streisand, Mel Torme, John Pizzarelli and Benny Carter. He will be joined in concert by award-winning jazz pianist Tamir Hendelman and bassist Christoph Luty.

Prior to the matinee concert, a Meet the Artists session is scheduled. Tickets for the concerts are available in the campus bookstore. Credit card orders may be phoned in ahead of time (800-959-3278, ext. 273, or 765-973-8273) for those attending from out of town. Tickets ordered by phone will be held in a call box outside Vivian Auditorium prior to the concert.
