| What do a world-renowned jazz musician, a former governor, a cartoonist and a former university president have in common? All are part of the Indiana Living Legends Class of 2001, to be honored by the Indiana Historical Society on July 27 at the third annual Living Legends Gala.
The Living Legends designation honors Indiana’s finest citizens and recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the state or to society through their personal or professional endeavors. This year’s inductees include jazz musician and IU Distinguished Professor of music David Baker, former governor Dr. Otis Bowen, who taught family medicine at the IU School of Medicine and served as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services until 1989, and IU School of Medicine cancer specialist Dr. Lawrence Einhorn.
Other 2001 inductees are Garfield creator Jim Davis, Father Theodore Hesburgh, former president of Notre Dame, and philanthropists the J. Irwin Miller Family and Jane Owen.
The Living Legends Gala was first introduced in 1999 as part of the grand opening festivities for the Indiana Historical Society’s new headquarters. For the inaugural year, Hoosiers were asked to vote for the first class of Indiana Living Legends. Those honored were Larry Bird, Carl Erskine, Bobby Knight, David Letterman, philanthropist Ruth Lilly, Sen. Richard Lugar, John Mellencamp, Jane Pauley, Oscar Robertson, Kurt Vonnegut, IU’s Herman B Wells, David Wolf and John Wooden. Violinist and IU alumnus Joshua Bell was honored as the 2000 Indiana Living Legend.
