
Mathiesen
| Thomas Mathiesen, Distinguished Professor and David H. Jacobs Chair in music at the IU School of Music in Bloomington, has been elected to membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is the 14th IUB faculty member to achieve membership in the academy and will be inducted at an October ceremony at the organization’s headquarters in Cambridge, Mass.
A leading specialist in ancient Greek music, Mathiesen’s book Apollo’s Lyre: Greek Music and Music Theory in Antiquity and the Middle Ages was recognized in 2000 by the American Musicological Society, the Society for Music Theory, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers as an outstanding work. He also directs one of the most successful on-line databases in the humanities, the Thesaurus Musicarum Latinarum.
Other elected members in the category of visual and performing arts this year include film-maker Woody Allen, photographer Richard Avadon, and composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim.
The American Academy of Arts and Sciences was founded more than 200 years ago by John Adams, James Bowdoin, John Hancock and other prominent leaders during the nation’s early years. The organization annually honors leading intellectuals from both the United States and abroad. It has a membership of 3,600 fellows and 600 foreign honorary members, who conduct projects and studies responsive to the needs and problems of society.
