‘Mini U’ at IUB June 17-22

IU South Bend hosting ‘Mini’ for kids

By Rose McIlveen

How about some university classes that have no final exams or grades?

That’s one of the attractions of the annual Mini University at Indiana University Bloomington, scheduled June 17-22.

There’s something for everyone, from the practical to the esoteric. “Strolling Through Constantinople” will be taught by art historian Eugene Kleinbauer, and “Ancient Greek and Roman Ghost Stories” will be presented by Timothy Long, who teaches classical studies.

Mini University classes provide a wide range of information for the curious student. For those who want to be up on the latest in technology, there is J. Michael Dunn’s class, “Informatics: What is it? Why is it Important?” Dunn, a philosophy professor, is the dean of the new IU School of Informatics.

Political scientist Marjorie Hershey will lecture on the topic: “Show Me the Money: Can We Reform Campaign Finance?” Gerardo Gonzalez, university dean of the IU School of Education, will share his own experience in his class, “A Cuban Immigrant’s Experience with the American Education System: From Vocational Track to the Deanship.”

For those who prefer to be in the know about things international, there is “The New China Lobby: Markets and Politics in the PRC,” taught by Scott Kennedy, who teaches East Asian languages and culture. Historian Charles Jelavich will give an “Update on the Balkans.”

Altogether, there are some 94 classes that fall into different categories, including the arts; business and technology; domestic issues; health, fitness and leisure; human growth and development; the humanities; international affairs; and science.
