Nationally recognized for her research on family adaptation to childhood epilepsy and asthma, IU Distinguished Professor Joan Austin will receive the Distinguished Contribution to Nursing Science award from the American Nurses Foundation.
The award, presented biennially to recognize a registered nurse who has made significant contributions to nursing research, will be presented at the American Nurses Association annual conference and convention on Sunday (June 27) in Minneapolis.
Austin has been a member of the IU School of Nursing (IUSON) faculty since 1981. Throughout her career, she has made outstanding contributions to nursing research, nursing education and health care. She directs IUSON’s Center for Enhancing Quality of Life in Chronic Illness (CEQL), one of nine research centers in the U.S. funded by National Institute of Nursing Research at the National Institutes of Health.
Austin was awarded Distinguished Professor rank by IU in 1999 and also is a member of the Institute of Medicine, a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and second vice president of the American Epilepsy Society. In 2005, she will become the first nurse to serve as president of that organization. http://www.iuinfo.indiana.edu/HomePages/032699/text/dp.htm
