The IU Art Museum in Bloomington will offer Friday jazz concerts beginning July 9.
The free outdoor Jazz in July concerts will be staged on the museum’s Sculpture Terrace on four consecutive Friday evenings. The lineup includes performances by the Caswell Sisters, Bill Lancton Quartet, Saxophone Cartel and the Riverboat Ramblers with Marty Hodapp. Concerts start at 6:30 p.m.
MFA graphic design student David Wolske created an African textile design for the concert series. Wolske’s design incorporates a digital scan of an African textile that ties the Jazz in July series to the museum’s display, Improvisation and Rhythm in African Textiles, in the first-floor Hexagon Gallery. The patterned details of African textiles have led some scholars to use jazz vocabulary in describing color and patterns showcased in the textiles.
As part of the textile and jazz theme, Diane Pelrine, curator of the arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas, will offer her insights into rhythms created with thread during a pre-concert gallery tour. Pelrine’s tour is at 5:30 p.m., prior to the July 30 concert.
The concert lineup includes:
• The Caswell Sisters (July 9): Jazz violinist Sara Caswell performs with her sister, vocalist Rachel Caswell. Both are graduates of the IU School of Music.
• Bill Lancton Quartet (July 16): Guitarist Bill Lancton offers jazz versions of Joni Mitchell tunes in addition to other selections from the ’60s and ’70s.
• Saxophone Cartel (July 23): This sextet borrows characteristics from rock, classical, ragtime and free-jazz.
• Riverboat Ramblers with Marty Hodapp (July 30): Dixieland jazz favorites are the highlight of this trio’s collection. Jazz historian and IUPUI professor Marty Hodapp offers commentary for several of the group’s tunes.
