For more than 145 years, Wishard Health Services has provided high quality, cost-effective health care to the citizens of Marion County. But rising costs, increased demand for Wishard’s services for the poor and declining reimbursement rates have now put Indiana’s largest public hospital in one of the toughest financial positions in the organization’s history. A fund-raising campaign begun earlier this month will culminate with a special one-hour television event, set to air throughout central Indiana Tuesday, July 6, at 7 p.m. on Indianapolis station WTHR, Channel 13.
The broadcast will focus on Wishard’s history, with stories of healing and hope from Wishard patients and their families. Viewers will meet 12-week old Lizbeth, who weighed only 1 lb. 7 oz. at birth; four house painters who survived a devastating fire in a truck on I-465 last summer; Patrick O’Brien, a courageous man being cared for through a terminal illness; and a group of talented individuals who have discovered creative expression and new meaning in their lives through an innovative art therapy program.
Past campaigns have raised funds to support the construction of the Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center at Wishard as well as Wishard’s Emergency Department, Level I Trauma Center and the Wishard Ambulance Service.
Wishard Health Services is the public hospital division of the Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County and is managed by the IU School of Medicine from which physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services.
