Broome

Marion Broome began her tenure as the fifth dean and second university dean of the IU School of Nursing (IUSON) this month. She also has an appointment to professor in the school’s Department of Family Health.

Over the past year, Broome has served as a consultant with IUSON, meeting extensively with IUSON board of advisers, faculty, staff and IU campus leaders. She plans to share her perceptions of and vision for the school during the fall semester. She will continue to work with faculty and staff to develop a strategic plan that will position the school for continued excellence.

"I was honored to be chosen as the next university dean of the IU School of Nursing," said Broome. "Being able to spend time this past year getting to know the faculty and staff better and hearing their ideas for the future has truly been a gift. I am very excited about working with such a talented group and confident that together we will be able to continue to build on the excellence that IUSON is known for nationally, as well as meet future challenges."

Broome was formerly at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) where she was professor and associate dean for research at the School of Nursing from 1999 to 2004. During her tenure, the school climbed in the National Institute of Health (NIH) rankings for nursing research from 51st to 16 in 2003.

Broome holds a doctorate degree in child and family development from the University of Georgia and is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN). She is widely regarded as an expert and leader in pediatric nursing research and practice. As a scholar, she has completed a series of funded projects that address key issues in the care of ill children and their parents. Her research in pediatric pain has been sponsored since 1991 by the American Cancer Society and the NIH. Her research is published in over 65 papers in 45 refereed nursing, medicine and interdisciplinary journals. She also has published five books and 10 chapters in books as well as in several consumer publications. Her two most recent studies, both funded by NIH, are in the area of research ethics and informed consent for children in research programs.

In 1997, Broome was appointed to a four-year term as a member of the Nursing Science Study Section at the NIH. In June, she was appointed as a charter member of the new nursing study section: Children and Families. She also has served as president of the Society for Pediatric Nurses, and been on the boards of the Association for the Care of Children’s Health and the Midwest Nursing Research Society. Currently, she is serving as editor-in-chief of Nursing Outlook, the official journal of the AAN.
