IU South Bend triumphs and transitions

Dr. Rudolph Navari, who has led the Walther Cancer Research Center at the University of Notre Dame, is now directing the IU School of Medicine at South Bend. He became the assistant dean of IUSM and director of the South Bend center on July 1. He had served as the associate dean of the College of Science at Notre Dame since 2000. Navari holds bachelor's and master's degrees and a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Virginia. After teaching chemical engineering at the University of Virginia and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and working as a research scientist at the Union Camp Corp., he entered the Medical College of Virginia and completed his medical degree. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and a fellowship at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. Navari had directed the Walther Cancer Research Center since 1999 and was named to his position at the Notre Dame College of Science in 2000. He succeeds John O'Malley, who had directed the South Bend center since 1993. O'Malley joined the IUSM faculty as an assistant professor of anatomy at the South Bend center nearly 34 years ago. He was named acting director of the center in 1993.
New quarters for IUSM-South Bend

IUSM-South Bend faculty move into new facility

Earlier this month, the faculty of the IU School of Medicine-South Bend moved into new quarters at the Ernestine Raclin and O.C. Carmichael Jr. Hall. It's the new home of faculty from IUSM-South Bend and the University of Notre Dame W.M. Keck Center for Transgene Research. Construction of the two-story, 46,000-square-foot building at 1234 Notre Dame Ave. began two years ago.

• For the first time in its history, IU South Bend has a full-time men's basketball coach.
Micah Shrewsberry will lead the men's basketball team next season. He is formerly the director of basketball operations for Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. Marshall is a member of the NCAA Mid-American Conference (MAC). He is the Titans first full-time head coach. Jim Parent served as a part-time head coach for the men's team the past three seasons. "Athletics and student life are important at IU South Bend," said IU South Bend Chancellor Una Mae Reck. "A full-time coach is an important step in the growth of our athletics program."

"This is an exciting time at IU South Bend," said Jeff Walker, executive director of athletics and recreation. "Micah is a good fit for the future of the team and the program."

Prior to his duties at Marshall, Shrewsberry was an assistant men's basketball coach at DePauw University for two years, where the Tigers compiled a record of 42-12. He was also an assistant at Wabash College and the University of Indianapolis.
