IU Southeast triumphs and transitions

• The numerous, sulfur-enriched mineral springs in southern Indiana represent a unique resource for the state. The springs, located in and around French Lick, have long been valued for their "medicinal purposes" and were even bottled at one time. Today, resorts in the area attract a significant amount of tourism because of the springs. David Treves, biology, along with Denise Duke, a senior biology major, are researching the different types of bacteria present in the springs and their functions. They will present their latest findings, titled "Bacterial diversity of a mesothermic, sulfur-enriched mineral spring in southern Indiana," Tuesday, July 26, at the joint meeting of the International Union of Microbiological Societies.

Larry Mand, who is currently in charge of information technology on campus, has assumed additional responsibilities for community relations in a new, expanded role as vice chancellor for IT and community engagement. The creation of the new position is an outgrowth of the recently completed IUS Strategic Plan, in which the sixth goal targets enhanced community relations.

Mand will be placing special emphasis on serving as a liaison for a broad range of diversified economic development activities in the regional community. He has also been the director for the campus' Lilly III Community Partners program since its inception in January 2004. To date, the program has placed 25 students in subsidized internships with 11 organizations throughout the region.
