Fee for some international students, visiting
scholars, to begin Sept. 1
|
One-time fee will generate revenue
for SEVIS operation
Effective Wednesday, Sept. 1, the U.S. Department of Homeland
Security requires the collection of a one-time fee of $100 from
certain international students and visiting scholars. The fee
is required to cover operational costs of the Student and Exchange
Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
SEVIS is a central computerized system that maintains and manages
data concerning international students (F-1 status), exchange
visitors (J-1 status), and their dependents (F-2 and
J-2) during their stay in the U.S.
Who must pay the fee:
• F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors (students and
scholars) beginning new programs with immigration documents
(I-20 forms for F-1s, DS-2019 forms for J-1s) issued on or after
Sept.1 will be required to pay the fee before applying for a
visa.
• Non-immigrants already in the U.S. who want to change
to F-1 or J-1 status will have to pay the fee before applying
for a change of status.
• Canadian citizens need to pay the fee before traveling
to the U.S. as it will not be possible to pay the fee at the
port of entry.
Exemptions from the fee:
With the exception of late arrivals, new F-1 and J-1 students
and scholars arriving for the fall 2004 semester will not pay
the fee. Continuing F-1 and J-1 students and scholars will also
not pay the fee. In addition, F-2 and J-2 dependents are exempt
from the fee, as are J-1 visitors whose DS-2019s were issued
by the U.S. government.
IU departments, or other third parties, may pay the fee on behalf
of a student or scholar if they wish. Instructions on accessing
and completing the form for payment are available on the Office
of International Services Web site.
