'The continent you map will be new to you'
So instructed IU President Myles Brand at
the freshman induction ceremony Aug. 22 at IUB’s Assembly Hall. As
the IUB Class of 2005 begins its academic journey, so too, does IU’s
new vice president for academic affairs and Bloomington campus chancellor.
Sharon Brehm, who began her duties in July, offered the new students
"five tips for how to survive and prosper in your first year
of college."

Rite of passage
An earlier rite of passage for IU students
was called an "Induction and Allegiance Ceremony." In
the 1930s, IU President William Lowe Bryan would ask the freshmen
to take an oath. Each new student was honor bound "to quicken
among my fellows the sense of social and civic duty."

IUB campus at capacity
The IU Bloomington campus has essentially
reached capacity in terms of undergraduate enrollment, according
to a report from a task force created to study this issue. The Ad
Hoc Task Force on Capacity of the IUB Campus recently submitted
its findings to IU President Myles Brand.

House Weekend Sept.7-9 in Bloomington
The IU Auditorium, the IU Art Museum and
the Musical Arts Center are all destinations on a weekend meant
to showcase Bloomington campus and community arts opportunities.

forums on strategic plan
IPFW students, faculty and staff, as well
as citizens of northeastern Indiana, have been invited to contribute
to the development of IPFW's Strategic Plan at public forums Sept.
12, Sept. 20.

Mother and daughter to share the IU experience
Marilyn Gearhart and Shannon Gearhart
are the first mother and daughter to be admitted in the
same class at the IU School of Medicine. The two appeared
Aug. 23 on ABC's Good Morning, America. Marilyn Gearhart
is a former teacher at DeKalb High School in Auburn. Shannon
Gearhart is a recent honors graduate of Loyola University
of Chicago. Both plan to practice medicine in underserved
areas.
