Goya

| Six etchings from Francisco Goya’s print series, The Disasters of War, are on view in the First Floor Gallery of Western Art throughout the fall semester at the IU Art Museum in Bloomington. The etchings, created in secret between 1810 and 1820, and not published until 1863, chronicle the artist’s horrified reactions to the invasion of Spain by Napoleon’s troops. Aesthetically masterful, but disturbing in content, Goya’s prints question the motives, methods and relevance of warfare. The artist took five years to complete the 82 plates which make up the series.
