The American Library Association’s (ALA) Banned Books Week begins Sept. 25. The ALA is urging Americans to “Elect to Read a Banned Book.” Each year, the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom receives hundreds of reports on books and other materials that have been “challenged” by people who asked that they be removed from school or library shelves. Check out the site that links to information at other institutions regarding the history of book burning. If you thought it was a modern phenomenon, check out the fate of the writings of Confucius in 213 B.C.E. or the top 100 nominations for book banning today. It’s fascinating reading!
