Integrative Pain Center opens in Indy

The IU Center of Excellence in Women’s Health and Wishard Hospital have opened the Integrative Pain Center (IPC). Because pain can affect all facets of a patient’s life, the IPC will provide a comprehensive, team approach for patients (both men and women) . The IPC combines traditional and complementary therapies that have been scientifically shown to be safe and effective with the goal of providing pain relief, increased self-care and quality of life.

Services to be provided include: acupuncture; anesthesiology (nerve blocks and trigger point injections); behavioral medicine (counseling, meditation, stress management, hypnosis); education and support groups; massage therapy; and rehabilitation medicine (physiatry, physical therapy and occupational therapy).

“Most of the time, a primary care physician can help patients manage pain until their bodies heal,” said Dr. Palmer MacKie, IPC medical director. “Unfortunately, sometimes the pain doesn’t go away and a more comprehensive treatment approach is needed. Oth erwise, patients with chronic pain can become disabled, depressed and alienated from family and friends.”

Acupuncture, one of the modalities that will be offered at the IPC, is quickly entering the mainstream of American medicine. In 1997, the National Institutes of Health released a consensus statement endorsing the safety and efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of pain. In addition, many insurance companies are covering acupuncture. “While acupuncture doesn’t work for everyone, I’ve seen some amazing results, especially in people who have suffered for years and failed to respond to traditional pain tre atments,” said Allison Tomusk, center director. “We’re really excited to be bringing this modality to the IU Medical Center.”

The IPC is located within the IU Center of Excellence for Women’s Health on the fourth floor of Regenstrief Health Center on the IUPUI campus.

Questions, appointment scheduling or referrals may be directed to the IPC at 317-630-PAIN (7246).
