Retired Army Gen. Colin L. Powell is scheduled to speak at the Indiana University Auditorium in Bloomington Nov. 3 at 4 p.m.
The former chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff will speak on “Challenges of a Changing World.”
Tickets are free and will be available first to IUB students, faculty and staff beginning Oct. 25. The event is co-sponsored by the IU Foundation and the Union Board.
“For the past several years, the Union Board Lectures Committee has consistently held Colin Powell as its top choice for a public lecture,” said Union Board President Mike Gosman. “The fact that this will be a reality just days before the presidential ele
ction is truly exciting.”
Powell began his military career in 1958 as an infantry lieutenant, later serving in the Vietnam War. In 1989, he was named a four-star general and nominated chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff by then-President George Bush. As chairman, Powell pla
yed an integral role in the planning of U.S. military efforts worldwide, including the Desert Storm and Desert Shield operations that forced Iraqi forces out of Kuwait. He retired from the military in 1993.
Since 1997, he has served as chairman of America’s Promise—The Alliance for Youth, a national campaign that strives to build and strengthen the character of young people.
