IUN a partner in neighborhood revitalization

IU Northwest is one of only 24 universities and colleges nationwide to receive a Community Outreach Partnership Centers (COPC) New Grant.

Awarded $399,973, IU Northwest and partners, Ivy Tech College, the City of Gary, the Gary Community Schools Corporation, LaCasa, Edgewater Systems for Balanced Living, Metro Corps of Gary, and neighborhood residents will work together to help revitalize t he neighborhood that runs along 35th Street from Broadway Avenue to Martin Luther King Drive. The area comprises 10 blocks with approximately 8,000 residents.

According to IUN’s Dan Lowery, project director, some of the activities the community partners will undertake include making Franklin School an anchor for the neighborhood by establishing a community-learning center and exploring better environmental desi gns for space, lighting and landscaping.

They will also be involved by establishing neighborhood liaisons for community service, community policing and city government.
