Flu season one subject of weekly health program from IUSM

This week, Sound Medicine guests discuss influenza, women and heart disease, and burning mouth syndrome.

Sound Medicine is co-produced by IU School of Medicine and WFYI Public Radio (90.1 FM) in Indianapolis. The program airs at 4 p.m. Sundays but listeners can hear segments from an audiostream archive by accessing the Web site at the bottom of this story.

Shawn Richards, respiratory epidemiologist for the Indiana State Department of Health’s Epidemiology Resource Center will discuss the upcoming flu season andl review the groups most at risk for getting the flu and talk about this year’s flu vaccine.

Heart disease and women will be the topic of Dr. Sharonne Hayes, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic and director of the Mayo Clinic Women’s Heart Clinic, and Marie Warshauer, support network coordinator of WomenHeart of Central Indiana. Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S. However, the symptoms can be very different from those of men. As a result, women and their doctors may not recognize a heart problem.

Burning mouth syndrome is a problem that plagues many people but is seldom heard about. The cause is not clear and it is difficult to diagnose, but it affects up to 5 percent of the U.S. population. Dr. Susan Zunt of the IU School of Dentistry will discuss the condition.
