Beering achievement award winner to speak Wednesday morning

Internationally recognized physiologist Richard Tsien will receive the Steven C. Beering Award for Outstanding Achievement in Biomedical Science during ceremonies at the Indiana University School of Medicine Wednesday (Oct. 18).

Tsien will receive the award at 8:30 a.m. at the University Place Conference Center auditorium after presenting a lecture titled “Signaling Across the Synapse And Onto the Nucleus.”

Tsien’s research has concentrated on understanding communication within the brain and heart involving the cellular signaling process. His work could affect treatments for migraines, hypertension and cerebellar ataxia. He is the founding chairman and Georg e D. Smith Professor at the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology, Stanford University School of Medicine. He also directs the Silvio Conte-National Institute of Mental Health Center for Neuroscience Research.

The Beering Award is presented annually to an outstanding medical research scientist and is named in honor of Dr. Steven C. Beering, who served as dean of the IU School of Medicine from 1974 to 1983 and as president of Purdue University for 17 years, reti ring this year.
