Jordan River Renewal project kicks off tomorrow at IUB

By Jayne Spencer

A day of trash pick-up along the banks of the Jordan River in Bloomington will initiate the Jordan River Renewal Project tomorrow (Oct. 14) from 1-4 p.m.

Sponsored by the Council for Environmental Stewardship, volunteers may gather in the parking lot at the School of Education to take part in what will be the first of a number of initiatives to refurbish the areas around the Jordan River.

Water quality monitoring and landscaping with native plants are in the planning stages by the council’s Jordan River Renewal Work Group, chaired by Jim Capshew, professor of history and philosophy of science.

The council is a campus-wide initiative formed in 1998 to engage students, faculty and staff in academic programs and administrative efforts that enhance the campus environment and contribute to a healthy and sustainable world.

Working groups within the council research issues, develop recommendations and then work with key decision makers and organizations to implement actions. Working groups look into such areas as energy use, environmental education, green space, hazardous ma terials, transportation materials management and waste reduction safety.
