Olympic gold medalist Michelle Venturella returned to Bloomington after her triumph in Sydney, Australia, to throw out the first pitch last Saturday when the IUB women’s softball team played Indiana State. Venturella w as an All American and played for IU from 1992-1995. Others with IU connections at the 2000 Summer Olympics were DeDee Nathan, a former IUB track standout who finished ninth in the heptathlon; Sara Reiling, an IUB junior who finished one place shy of maki ng the finals in 10-meter platform diving; Charles Burton, IUB assistant wrestling coach, who placed fifth in freestyle wrestling; and Jeff Huber, IUB diving coach, who was an assistant diving coach.

IU fielded its first athletic team in 1867; the sport was men’s baseball.

At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, IU’s James “Doc” Counsilman was the head coach of the most successful U.S. swimming team ever, with 12 golds and 10 silvers in 13 events. For more on IU’s Olympic tradition, go to this site:
