The IU Bloomington Advisors’ Council (BAC) held its second annual conference at the Indiana Memorial Union Sept. 29. Participants included (left to right) Steven Wietstock, president of BAC; Carolyn Lipson-Walker, named adviser of the y ear by the College of Arts and Sciences; Elizabeth Kurpius, associate athletic director for academics; and Mary Rose, athletic academic counselor. The theme of the conference was “Advising in the 21st Century: Tradition, Innovation, and Vision.” “Coach Bu zz” Kurpius, who began her athletic career at IU as an assistant football coach for Lee Corso, received a certificate of appreciation from BAC. She will retire in June after 25 years and a career that established IU as the first Big Ten university to hire an adviser to help athletes stay on track toward graduation. Listen to this WFIU audio streamed interview with Kurpius at:

Leroy Bannerman (right), IU professor emeritus of radio and television, greeted IU President Myles Brand at the 50th anniversary celebration of WFIU at the IU Auditorium in Bloomington Oct. 6. During its first nine months of operations, the station averaged 37.5 hours of programming per week and legend has it that residents of nearby dorms would occasionally pick up the station on dental fillings, eyeglasses and electric shavers. In a tribute to Bannerman and other professors he had as an IU student and WFIU announcer in the early 1960s, award-winning TV sit-com writer and producer John Rappaport recalled that the faculty “patiently tolerated all kinds of shenanigans and played major formative parts in all our lives.” Read Rappaport’s e ssay at:
