IU School of Music professor Timothy Nobleis pleased with
Hollywood’s recent fascination with legendary songwriter Cole Porter.
“Personally, he’s the greatest American songwriter,” says Noble, claiming he’s always felt a special connection (both Noble and Porter share the same Hoosier hometown of Peru).
His admiration for Porter prompted the world-famous baritone to record a disc of Cole Portersongs, Simply Cole. He’s following up with another CD that includes songs from Porter and fellow Hoosier Hoagy Carmichael.
Should anyone suggest Noble’s high esteem of Porter is biased, he shares his 1968 conversation with Irving Berlin, during Berlin’s 80th birthday celebration for the Ed Sullivan Show. “(Berlin) asked me if I knew Cole, and I said I never knew him personally,” relates Noble, who was 23 years old at the time. “Then Berlin told me: ‘He was the best of all of us.’ It doesn’t come from a better authority than Irving Berlin.”
