• Some of the first scientific lake studies conducted anywhere in the world were done in Indiana. IU established a field station on Lake Wawasee in 1895 and a pioneering study of Lake Maxinkuckee’s physical and biological characteristics, published in 1920, still serves as a model of how lakes have been studied elsewhere.

• The Midnight Special, a late night bus service created by Transportation Services on the IU Bloomington campus last year, expects to exceed 10,000 riders by the end of the semester. Buses leave the IMU bus shelter beginning at 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and leave every 15 minutes through 2:45 a.m. Are mid-terms on the horizon? The weekend record was set Sept. 26-28, with 925 passengers. For north and south Midnight Special route maps:
