Creole specialist to speak at IUB Nov. 13

Horizons of Knowledge is sponsoring a lecture by John McWhorter of the University of California, Berkeley Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 4 p.m. in Fine Arts 015, IU Bloomington.

His topic will be “The world’s simplest grammars are creole grammars.” McWhorter specializes in language change and language contact with a concentration on pidgin and creole languages. He is the author of several books, including The Power of Babel: A Natural History of Language, The Missing Spanish Creoles: Recovering the Birth of Plantation Creole Languages and The Word on the Street. McWhorter has been a guest on Dateline NBC, Politically Incorrect, Talk of the Nation, Today, All Things Considered, Good Morning, America, and Fresh Air, and is regularly interviewed by the New York Times.
